Inside Ombak Festival 2025: An escape into music, community & nostalgia

Ombak Festival 2025 revived the spirit of the ‘90s with Simply Red, world-class sound, coastal elegance, and a vibrant community experience.

There is a certain magic to the 1990s, a decade defined by unfiltered creativity, iconic melodies, and a cultural energy that continues to inspire.

At this year’s Ombak Festival in Desaru, Johor, Malaysia, that nostalgia was brought to life in spectacular fashion, culminating in a performance by Simply Red that reminded us why great music transcends time.

As both a musician and music enthusiast, I found myself captivated not only by the artistry on stage but also by the flawless sound design. Rarely does live audio achieve such clarity, and when Simply Red delivered If You Don’t Know Me by Now and Sunrise, the crowd was transformed into a single chorus of voices, unified by rhythm and memory.

Yet Ombak was more than a concert; it was an experience crafted with intention.

The culinary offerings were curated to perfection, providing a wide array of options that elevated the festival beyond music. The concierge bus service, meanwhile, evoked the spirit of Europe’s renowned festivals. It wasn’t merely transport, it was a cultural prelude. Conversations flowed freely, strangers became companions, and the atmosphere felt reminiscent of Tomorrowland: vibrant, genuine, and electric.

The evening concluded with an after-party at Ember Beach Club that redefined coastal elegance. Under the night sky, with the ocean as backdrop, festivalgoers danced as though paradise itself had descended upon the shore. The ambience was magnetic, the music seamless, and the energy unrelenting.

Ombak Festival stands not only as a celebration of music but also as a celebration of community. It is a rare gathering where nostalgia and contemporary energy intersect, creating a cultural moment that lingers well beyond its final note.

For those who yearn for the spirit of the ‘90s and early 2000s, this is the festival to watch and for me, returning next year is not a choice but a certainty.
