Yet, it was the conquered Greeks whose culture, art, and philosophy eventually captivated and transformed the Romans. The Roman Empire, seduced by the elegant sophistication of Greek high culture, became in many ways a vessel for Hellenic civilization. Roman elites & patrician (gentry) studied Greek philosophy, adopted Greek artistic principles, and even educated their children in Greek. Power had won the territories, but elegance had conquered the soul.
