A Welcome With Deep Roots

The warmth we felt at SmartMaster TRX Exchange 106 has a story behind it. Datuk Dickson Phang began his tailoring journey in 1984 at a small shop in Campbell Shopping Centre, mastering measurement, pattern making, construction and fabric selection. In 1998 he established his own production under the SmartMaster name, with a vision to make quality formalwear more accessible while honouring the art of bespoke. The first store opened in 1999 at IOI Puchong Mall, and the brand became one of the first in Malaysia to unite bespoke tailoring with ready-to-wear.

That devotion to craft continues today across 20 stores nationwide. Executive Director Jenson Phang, who grew up within the family business, guides its future with fresh energy and the same care for fit. The new TRX Exchange 106 boutique is the latest chapter, and stepping inside, you can feel a house that takes pride in welcoming people.

Choosing the Details

Choosing the details was a highlight in itself. We selected wool, a fabric that drapes beautifully and carries a natural sense of quality. For colour, we went with royal blue, a sophisticated and versatile shade that moves easily from the office to an evening dinner and looks sharp in every setting. For the style, we chose a single-breasted jacket over a double-breasted one, because its clean, streamlined line offers maximum versatility and suits any occasion, from a Monday boardroom to a Saturday celebration.

The peak lapel added a touch of distinction, lifting the shoulders and drawing the eye upward for a confident, elegant line. For the cut, we chose a classic fit, comfortable and balanced, with room to move and a clean silhouette that sits just right on the body. Each decision felt exciting, and together they formed a suit with lasting character.

The Fitting

The fitting was our favourite part. Seeing the suit take shape, with its lines already following the body, brought a smile that was hard to hide. Small refinements were made with precision, and each one brought the garment closer to perfect. It felt collaborative and personal, and thoroughly enjoyable.

It also revealed something about what a well-fitted suit can do. From the first measurement to collection, the entire journey took less than a month. That pace made the anticipation part of the pleasure, and the days leading up to collection carried a lovely sense of excitement.

When the day arrived, we slipped the jacket on and it felt wonderful. The fit was superb, the finish was refined and the confidence was instant. The royal blue wool proved every bit as versatile as we hoped, ready for the boardroom on Monday and a celebration on Saturday. We left happy, energised and already planning where to wear it first.
