Beyond 1,400 robotic surgeries: Dato' Dr Loh Chit Sin on why true mastery still depends on the man behind the machine

Malaysia's Dato' Dr Loh Chit Sin, the only Malaysian honoured for the 1,000 Robotic Surgical Case Milestone Award, shares why mastery defines great surgery.

In an age captivated by artificial intelligence and increasingly sophisticated machines, it is easy to believe that technology alone defines excellence. Yet Dato' Dr Loh Chit Sin, who has completed more than 1,400 robotic-assisted surgeries and was recently recognised as the only Malaysian honoured alongside three surgeons from Thailand with the 1,000th Robotic Surgical Case Milestone Award, offers a timely reminder that mastery remains profoundly human.

For Dr Loh, the robot is not the story.

The surgeon is.

"Robotic technology is a tool. It does not automatically make a surgeon better," he says. The statement is striking precisely because it rejects the temptation to glorify technology. Instead, it returns our attention to the qualities that have always separated masters from practitioners: judgement, discipline, preparation and responsibility.

Dato’ Dr Loh Chit Sin, Consultant Urologist at Hospital Picaso, shares the hospital’s key milestones and vision as Malaysia’s one-stop prostate cancer centre during his opening address.

These are qualities that cannot be downloaded, automated or manufactured.

They are earned.

Every operation demands decisions that no machine can independently make. When to proceed, when to pause, when to adapt, and ultimately how to place the patient's wellbeing above every other consideration. Precision may be enhanced by robotics, but wisdom is cultivated only through years of experience.

That philosophy also explains why Dato’ Dr Loh Chit Sin repeatedly emphasises teamwork rather than individual achievement. Modern robotic surgery is not the accomplishment of a single operator, but the coordinated effort of surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and multidisciplinary specialists working towards a common objective: achieving the best possible outcome for the patient. Excellence, in other words, is rarely a solo pursuit.

This approach is reflected in Hospital Picaso's development of an integrated prostate care pathway, where diagnosis, treatment planning, robotic surgery and recovery are coordinated within a multidisciplinary environment rather than delivered in isolation. Technology serves as an enabler, but patient-centred care remains the guiding principle.

There is also an understated lesson in humility.

Professional milestones often invite celebration, yet Dato’ Dr Loh Chit Sin views his recognition not as a destination but as another chapter in continuous learning. Even after more than 1,400 robotic-assisted procedures, he speaks not of perfection, but of refining techniques, learning from every case and improving as a team.

That mindset embodies a principle Gentleman's Code has long admired: mastery is never announced; it is continually pursued.

Whether in surgery, tailoring, architecture, music or watchmaking, the finest craftsmen share the same quiet conviction. Their greatest achievement is not the award they receive, but the standards they refuse to compromise.

Perhaps that is why Dato' Dr Loh's milestone resonates beyond medicine.

It reminds us that while machines may become faster, smarter and more precise, they cannot replace the qualities that define exceptional professionals: sound judgement, humility, responsibility and commitment to excellence.

Technology evolves.

Character remains the ultimate instrument of mastery.
