The automotive world is abuzz with the unveiling of Bugatti's latest marvel, the Tourbillon. This $4.6 million hypercar boasts a 1775-HP hybrid V-16 powertrain and finally, doors that befit its opulent price tag.

A Tale of Doors and Dollars

Tech mogul Russ Hanneman, known for his bold investments, recently had to part with his beloved McLaren, a symbol of his billionaire status, due to some financial missteps. Now cruising in a Maserati, Hanneman's main gripe isn't the performance but the doors. His McLaren featured dramatic dihedral doors that swung up with the flair of a hawk’s wings, a stark contrast to the ordinary doors of his current ride.

The Evolution of Bugatti

Since the Bugatti Veyron's debut in 2005, followed by the Chiron in 2015, the brand has been synonymous with speed and luxury. Yet, despite their multimillion-dollar tags, these models sported conventional doors, lacking the theatrical entry and exit that many hypercar enthusiasts crave.

That has now changed with the Bugatti Tourbillon, revealed on June 20th. This is the first new design since Bugatti merged with electric sports car maker Rimac in 2021. The Tourbillon features dihedral doors that swing out and up, a feature that would surely win Hanneman’s approval.

A New Era for Bugatti

The doors are just the beginning. The Tourbillon represents a complete overhaul from the Chiron it replaces, with no components carried over. Gone is the Chiron’s turbocharged W-16 engine, renowned for its dragon-like roar through the turbo wastegate valves. In its place, the Tourbillon boasts an 8.3-liter V-16 engine, naturally aspirated to deliver an even more visceral sound.

Adding to the innovation, the Tourbillon is equipped with three electric motors—two at the front axle and one at the rear—generating a combined 789 horsepower. Alongside the engine, this setup produces a staggering 1775 horsepower, outstripping any previous Bugatti model. To put that into perspective, the powerful 2024 Porsche 911 GT3 has 502 horsepower.

Design and Performance

Visually, the Tourbillon maintains the iconic Bugatti aesthetic but with enhancements. It’s lower, leaner, and wider, with a narrower cockpit that emphasizes an analog feel. This is highlighted by the watch-inspired gauge cluster, crafted by a Swiss watchmaker. The cluster features raised numbers, physical needles, and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal coverings, resembling a mechanical timepiece.

Limited to 250 units, the Bugatti Tourbillon is expected to begin deliveries next summer. Performance figures are equally impressive: it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.0 seconds and reach 250 mph in about 25 seconds, shaving .3 seconds off the time set by the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+.

The Ultimate Statement

Beyond its performance, the Bugatti Tourbillon offers an unparalleled level of sophistication and drama, ensuring that every entrance and exit is as spectacular as the drive itself.
