I remember the first time I came across an image of the tiny fortified island rising from the Adriatic Sea.

It did not look real.

The terracotta roofs glowed softly against turquoise water, connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of stone like something from an old European painting. Unlike the loud glamour often associated with Mediterranean luxury, there was something quieter here. More restrained. More aristocratic. The kind of beauty that does not beg to be noticed because it already knows its worth.

This summer, Aman officially reopens the storied retreat for the 2026 season, beginning with Villa Miločer on 22 May before the island of Sveti Stefan itself welcomes guests again on 1 July. For those who follow the world of cultivated travel closely, the reopening feels less like another hotel announcement and more like the return of a grand old sanctuary.

Aman Sveti Stefan, Montenegro – Island of Sveti Stefan.

Montenegro has always fascinated me because it still feels slightly untouched by the chaos of modern tourism. While parts of Europe now struggle beneath the weight of crowds and performative luxury, Montenegro retains a sense of mystery. Mountains tumble into the sea. Ancient churches appear beside quiet coves. The sunsets feel cinematic without trying too hard.

And perhaps that is precisely why Aman feels so perfectly placed here.

Set along the Adriatic coastline, Aman Sveti Stefan has long carried an almost mythical reputation among discerning travellers. The mainland residence, Villa Miločer, was once the summer home of Queen Marija Karađorđević, and even today the property retains the atmosphere of an old royal retreat hidden beneath pine trees and olive groves. One can almost imagine linen curtains moving gently in the sea breeze while conversations linger over long lunches by the water.

Then there is the island itself.

Crossing into Sveti Stefan is said to feel like stepping into another century. Stone pathways, weathered cottages and medieval walls have all been carefully preserved, yet softened by Aman’s signature serenity. Unlike resorts that overwhelm guests with spectacle, Aman understands the power of restraint. The silence matters. The space matters. Even the stillness feels intentional.

I suspect that is what many modern travellers are truly searching for now. Not noise. Not excess. But emotional quietness.

The reopening also arrives at a moment when luxury itself is evolving. Increasingly, the world’s most sophisticated travellers are moving away from flashy displays of status and toward experiences that feel deeply personal and restorative. Places where privacy is valued more than visibility. Where mornings begin with the sound of waves instead of notifications.

At Aman Sveti Stefan, days seem designed to unfold slowly. A swim at Queen’s Beach beneath the early morning sun. Long afternoons overlooking the Adriatic from the Cliff Bar. A treatment at the expansive Aman Spa infused with local herbs and Montenegrin botanicals. Even the dining feels intimate rather than performative, with seasonal Adriatic flavours taking centre stage instead of theatrical presentation.

What excites me most, however, is not simply the reopening of a luxury resort. It is the return of a certain feeling.

The feeling that somewhere in Europe, there is still a corner of the world where elegance has not become loud. Where beauty still whispers. Where history, nature and cultivated living exist in quiet harmony.

In many ways, Aman Sveti Stefan represents the kind of luxury that never truly goes out of style because it was never chasing trends to begin with.

And perhaps that is what makes its return feel so special.
