GC at Hilton Petaling Jaya: A staycation and dining experience where sentimental value runs deep

We discover the newly refurbished Hilton Petaling Jaya - a beloved Selangor landmark offering luxurious rooms, world-class dining at Paya Serai, Genji & Toh Yuen, and exceptional facilities.

Words: Nina

Hilton Petaling Jaya holds a special place close to every Selangor's heart.

For my family, this iconic landmark carries memories that span generations. My father-in-law often reminisced about the days when this property was known as Jaya Puri Hotel in 1980s, where he and my mother-in-law would go on dates. He'd tell me with a gleam in his eye how the crown prince once smiled at them during one of those dinings - a moment that became part of our family folklore.

This wasn't just any hotel. It was where romances blossomed, celebrations were held, and the community gathered. The sentimental value and strong affinity that people living in Selangor have with this establishment runs deep, woven into the fabric of countless personal histories.

Recently refurbished and reimagined, Hilton Petaling Jaya beckoned us back to discover why this hotel remains one of the most beloved places to stay and dine in town. We decided to relive those cherished memories and experience firsthand what the new transformation had to offer.

The King Deluxe Room

Room That Marry Comfort with Contemporary Style

Upon entering our standard room, we were immediately impressed by the thoughtful redesign. The space was ample and thoughtfully laid out, featuring warm tones and contemporary furnishings that created an inviting atmosphere. A large flat-screen television dominated one wall, while a stylish workspace beckoned to those needing to attend to business matters - perfectly positioned with adequate lighting and power outlets.

The real showstopper, however, was the bathroom. Dressed entirely in rich brown-coloured marble, it epitomized luxury and functionality. The separate toilet provided privacy, while the walk-in rain shower cubicle offered a refreshing experience. But it was the large square-shaped bathtub that truly caught our attention - an invitation to unwind after a long day of exploration. An interesting feature was the adjustable blinds between the bathroom and bedroom, allowing guests to control their privacy levels as desired. All bathroom amenities bore the L'Occitane label, filling the air with sweet, sophisticated fragrances that elevated the bathing experience from routine to indulgent.

Gym facilities and swimming pool

World-Class Facilities

During our stay, we explored the hotel's impressive amenities, starting with the gym. Housing the largest gym facilities in Malaysia under the Hilton brand, this wasn't just a token fitness room with a treadmill and some dumbbells. Run by trained professionals, the expansive space featured a vast array of machines and weights catering to any workout preference, from cardio enthusiasts to serious weightlifters. The equipment was modern, well-maintained, and thoughtfully arranged.

The wave-shaped outdoor swimming pool proved equally inviting. Clean and well-maintained, it offered plenty of sundeck chairs for sun worshippers and umbrella-covered spaces for those seeking shade. Since we stayed over the weekend, families filled the pool area - children splashing joyfully under their parents' watchful eyes. The hotel doesn't have a separate children's pool, so parents remained attentive, but the relaxed atmosphere suggested everyone was having a wonderful time.

The Executive Lounge with Merdeka 118 View

The Executive Lounge: A Cut Above

The Executive Lounge deserves special mention and is definitely worth the investment. While most hotels today feature lounges, Hilton Petaling Jaya's offering distinguishes itself through thoughtful details and superior service. The decoration and artwork maintain consistency with the hotel's aesthetic - mocha-coloured furnishings and elemental brown soft carpets creating a sophisticated yet comfortable environment.

The lounge impresses with its food and beverage offerings throughout the day. The spread thoughtfully balances international selections with authentic local favorites that resonate with Malaysian guests. Fresh tropical fruits provide a refreshing treat, while aromatic coffee keeps you energized. For those craving local flavors, the lounge serves crowd-pleasers like mee goreng mamak - that beloved spicy stir-fried noodle dish that's a Malaysian staple - and crispy samosas perfect for afternoon snacking. This blend of international comfort and local authenticity ensures that whether you're a business traveler or leisure guest, the Executive Lounge caters to your palate while providing a productive and relaxing sanctuary.

Culinary Excellence Across Three Outstanding Restaurants

Our culinary journey at Hilton Petaling Jaya proved nothing short of spectacular, sampling three distinct dining experiences that showcased the hotel's commitment to gastronomic excellence.

Breakfast at Paya Serai

Operating for the last 35 years, Paya Serai has earned its reputation as a household name for Selangorians, particularly renowned for its buffet spreads. Our breakfast experience delivered on every expectation. The spread was vast and varied. Western-styled dishes sat alongside local delicacies, warm buttery pastries tempted from the bakery station, and a dedicated egg station prepared your eggs exactly to preference. The foods were fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Whether you craved nasi lemak or fluffy pancakes, continental cheeses or fresh tropical fruits, Paya Serai catered to every palate with equal expertise.

Dinner at Genji Restaurant

Our dinner at Genji proved to be an exceptional journey into authentic Japanese cuisine. Under the guidance of Kunihiko Hamada, a renowned Japanese head chef celebrated for his refined techniques and commitment to authentic Japanese flavors with years of experience in celebrated kitchens across Japan and beyond, the restaurant prides itself on using ingredients air-flown from Japan (except for Norwegian salmon).

The newly facelifted decor at Genji masterfully blends modernity with tradition, creating an ambiance that is both sophisticated and serene. The artificial lake with bonsai at the entrance immediately elevates the atmosphere, setting the tone for the culinary experience ahead. Inside, sleek contemporary design elements - minimalist furniture and chic lighting fixtures - harmonize seamlessly with traditional Japanese aesthetics, including shoji screens and intricate woodwork.

For dinner, I ordered the Utsusemi Satisfying Course (RM360), featuring appetizer, three pieces of sushi, steamed egg custard, tempura, one chef's specialty, hot pot dish, and dessert. My husband chose the Hujitsubo (RM279), which included appetizer, garden salad, steamed egg custard, sashimi, salt-grilled snow fish, grilled beef with teriyaki sauce, crispy fried soft-shell crab, teppan-yaki sautéed mushrooms, steamed rice, miso soup, and dessert.

Both courses were exquisite, showcasing incredibly fresh ingredients served in generous portions. Each dish demonstrated Chef Hamada's mastery, from the delicate steamed egg custard to the perfectly grilled proteins and expertly prepared sashimi. The experience exemplified why Genji continues to be a destination for those seeking genuine Japanese kaiseki dining in Petaling Jaya.

Lunch at Toh Yuen

Toh Yuen, a hidden gem and one of the finest Muslim-friendly Chinese restaurants in the area, proved to be the culinary highlight of our stay. This pork-free establishment delivers authentic Cantonese cuisine that my wife declared the best she'd experience and I wholeheartedly agreed.

Our eight-dishes journey began with braised crabmeat broth with scallop and asparagus served in a mini pumpkin - a unique, well-constructed soup that activated our tastebuds. The pumpkin beautifully accentuated the delicate crabmeat broth. The Vietnamese shrimp spring roll with mango followed, offering crispy texture and the surprising sweetness of mango as a flavor enhancer.

The steamed premium siew mai with Hokkaido scallop, crowned with caviar, emerged as a star of the menu - luxurious and perfectly balanced. Equally stunning was the steamed cod fish dumpling with chicken broth, the prettiest dish of all, layered with a hint of orange broth that appealed to both eyes and palate.

The wok-fried rice with assorted seafood, dried scallop, and egg white delivered essential wok hei - that smoky, charred aroma permeating every bite. But it was the deep-fried fish skin with salted egg yolk that stole the show as our favorite dish - crispy, creamy perfection that would be a crowd favorite and something we'd order every visit.

The sweet and sour chicken with dried figs proved that even classics can be elevated; the figs paired brilliantly with the tangy sauce, keeping us coming back for more. We concluded with chilled mango puree with sago and pomelo - a light, fruity dessert that perfectly ended our foodgasm journey.

Every dish was made to perfection, with courteous staff delivering the level of hospitality expected at top-tier restaurants. Toh Yuen's menu fits perfectly with the essence of what fine Chinese dining should be - delicious dishes shared with loved ones in an atmosphere of warmth and excellence.

A Legacy Renewed

As we checked out after our memorable stay, I reflected on how Hilton Petaling Jaya has evolved while maintaining its essential character. The recently refurbished hotel successfully bridges past and present, honoring the nostalgia and memories associated with its Jaya Puri Hotel heritage while embracing contemporary luxury and modern traveler expectations.

This is more than just a hotel; it's an institution that has witnessed countless life moments - first dates, business deals, family celebrations, and quiet escapes. The transformation hasn't erased what made it special. Rather, it has enhanced and elevated the experience, ensuring that Hilton Petaling Jaya continues to hold a cherished place in Selangor people's hearts for generations to come.
