Since 1990 UMW Toyota Motor has without exception brought to our shores the Toyota Classics series annually. Like the previous 28 years, yesterday night has gathered us in this grand venue to appreciate fine classical music.

Toyota’s very own Classical music performance, the Toyota Classics concert presented the Orchestra of The Age of Enlightenment to the full-packed audiences yesterday 13 November 2018 at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS, KLCC. The concert aimed to raise funds for a socio economic program involving Orang Asli community and research on renewable energy efficiency by two top Universities in Malaysia.

The Orchestra of The Age of Enlightenment is a period instrument orchestra named after the age in European history known as The Enlightenment, an era spanning the late seventeenth, eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It is a world-famous Orchestra from London, marking their Asian debut at Toyota Classics.

The Toyota Classics this year focus on bringing the joy of music with the theme, “Music that Moves Lives.” Aligned with Toyota’s global vision of providing mobility for all, the said concert supports the ‘Start Your Impossible’ campaign, aiming to inspire people to strive for their dreams and make their impossible happen.

The orchestra was performed under the baton of conductor Steven Devine who has delighted the audience with a programme of baroque music masterpieces. Some of the famous composition by the Orchestra yesterday are Handel's Water Music, Bach's Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor and Mozart's Symphony No. 25. Excerpts from the opera Rinaldo and the oratorio Messiah by Handel, as well as the Winter concerto from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, also included.

Jojo Struys hosted the programme, thanking the audience here tonight for their presence and for extending a helping hand towards the very worthy social programs funded through this event.

The 90 minutes orchestra featured British soprano Charlotte Beament who mesmerised the audience with her powerful voice, leader and violin soloist Daniel Edgar who demonstrated exceptional violin skills, and violinist Kinga Ujszaszi.

Organised annually by UMW Toyota Motor and Toyota Motor Corporation since 1990 Toyota Classics is a musical charity event. UMW Toyota Motor takes pride in presenting this annual classical event, as part of its high cultural contribution in the arena of music in Malaysia. UMW Toyota Motor has funded more than RM 8.6 million to charities and social projects since the inception of Toyota Classics.

This year’s gross proceeds collected from ticket sales and donations will be channelled to Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s (UKM) “Mobilising Youth for Sustainable Change”, an initiative to develop socio economic program for Orang Asli community. UKM have developed an Eco Village Resort Project that enables the youth of the Orang Asli to help their own community to be resilient, able to fend for themselves and at the same time create a valuable relationship between these indigenous people of the land and general community.

Another portion of the gross proceeds collected will fund Universiti Malaya’s Power Energy Dedicated Advance Centre for a research on renewable energy through the innovation of technology for Solar Photovoltaic Thermal (PV/T ) Cooling System. The result of this study will provide sufficient approach to assist the development of future PV/T system with high efficiency at low cost. This research will benefit many people in rural and remote areas especially in East Malaysia so they can have access to constant electricity supply.

Yesterday's musical event has made many corporate social undertakings possible as music is a common denominator that binds all of us together.

Let us looking forward for another beautiful evening of music-making and eventually, preserve the culture of refinement next year!
