Socrates famously declared that the unexamined life is not worth living. In an age of distraction, this ancient wisdom feels more urgent than ever. Yet true examination, such as genuine intellectual curiosity and rigorous self-reflection, requires something fundamental: education.

This November, one Malaysian philanthropist demonstrated his belief in this principle with a commitment that goes far beyond mere numbers. Tan Sri Sir Dr. Jeffrey Cheah, founder of Sunway Group and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, pledged RM100 million annually over five years - a staggering half-billion ringgit - to establish one of Malaysia's largest education endowments.

The announcement, delivered at the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation's 2025 Scholarships and Awards Ceremony, marks more than philanthropic generosity. It represents a profound philosophical statement, that education unlocks human potential in ways nothing else can.

"As long as I have the privilege of time, I will keep giving," Tan Sri Cheah declared. His vision extends beyond his lifetime, modelled after enduring institutions like Harvard University and the University of al-Qarawiyyin, one of the world's oldest universities. This endowment aims to support academic excellence, research, and innovation at Sunway University in perpetuity - a gift that keeps giving, generation after generation.

The ceremony itself illustrated this philosophy in action. Her Royal Highness Tengku Permaisuri Hajah Norashikin graced the occasion, personally presenting awards to students whose lives are being transformed through education. Among them were recipients of the inaugural Sir Jeffrey Cheah Sunway Medical School Scholarship and the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation Community Scholarship - programmes specifically designed to elevate students from welfare homes and underprivileged communities.

This year alone, more than 6,700 students received scholarships totalling RM75 million. These aren't merely financial transactions; they're investments in examined lives - in young minds equipped to question, analyse, and contribute meaningfully to society.

The Foundation's impact speaks volumes. Having disbursed over RM967 million to date, it stands poised to surpass RM1 billion by 2026, cementing its position as one of Malaysia's most significant private philanthropic vehicles in education.

What drives such extraordinary commitment? Perhaps it's the recognition that an educated society is an examined society - one where citizens possess the tools to reflect critically on their lives, their communities, and their nation's trajectory. Education doesn't simply prepare people for careers; it cultivates the capacity for meaningful existence.

Tan Sri Cheah's aspiration for Sunway University to become "one of the world's great centres of learning" reflects this deeper understanding. Great universities don't merely produce graduates; they nurture thinkers who question assumptions, challenge conventions, and pursue truth wherever it leads.

In our rapidly evolving world, where artificial intelligence and automation reshape entire industries, human potential matters more than ever. The ability to think critically, adapt creatively, and reflect meaningfully are cultivated through education.

The examined life, Socrates argued, distinguishes human existence from mere survival. Tan Sri Cheah's half-billion ringgit commitment isn't just about buildings or programmes. It's about unlocking countless examined lives - each one a testament to education's transformative power and "noblesse oblige" of a man.
